10 Perspectives for JOURNAL WORK on Our Self-Inquiry Work with Shame
Perhaps the most powerful perspective for your JOURNAL WORK is: Shame is a story about the past NOW pretending to be an identity in the present NOW!
- Shame says, “I am bad.”
Guilt says, “I did something bad.”
That distinction matters. Guilt can point toward repair; shame attacks identity. - Shame often lives in the past.
It takes something that happened then and keeps making it part of NOW.
“I made that mistake” becomes “I am a mistake.” - Shame is often borrowed.
Sometimes the voice saying “You should be ashamed of yourself” isn’t really ours. It may be a parent’s voice, a teacher’s voice, a religious message, a cultural expectation, or someone who hurt us. - Shame thrives in secrecy.
What we hide tends to grow in power. Bringing something into compassionate awareness can begin to take away its control. - Shame confuses behavior with identity.
I failed becomes I am a failure.
I lied becomes I am a liar.
I made a poor choice becomes I am a bad person. - Shame can be a signal—but it isn’t always the truth.
The feeling is real. The conclusion may not be.
Feeling shame doesn’t automatically mean you deserve shame. - Shame can be transformed by self-compassion.
Instead of asking, “What’s wrong with me?” ask:
“What happened to me, what did I learn, and what do I need NOW?” - Shame disconnects; compassion reconnects.
Shame tells us to hide. Compassion allows us to remain present with ourselves—even when we’re uncomfortable. - Shame can become wisdom.
When we stop using shame to punish ourselves, we can use the experience to discover values, boundaries, responsibility, forgiveness, and growth. - Shame asks, “Who do you think you are?”
A powerful NOW question is:
“Who am I choosing to be in this moment?”
That self-care journal time shows you are Living in the NOW. The goal isn’t to pretend the past didn’t happen. It’s to stop allowing the past to define the person you are, standing here NOW.
